The Volkswagen Beetle officially takes its well-deserved retirement

The time for retirement came in July for the Volkswagen Beetle, an icon of the automotive industry and one of the most well-known cars in history. Volkswagen celebrated the end of the Beetle’s production run a few weeks ago with an event at the Puebla plant in Mexico.

The Volkswagen Beetle was first conceived as a war car by the German army. It was later converted into a car for the public and by 1955 it had already reached 1 million sales. In 1998, Volkswagen gave us the New Beetle, a car that was immensely popular as soon as it hit the market and should become a classic one day.

In total, more than 21 million Volkswagen Beetles were sold to buyers around the world over its long career. While Volkswagen is more and more promoting electric technology, history will still hold a place for the Volkswagen Beetle, one of the most significant and polarizing cars ever produced.
