Three ways the Volkswagen 4Motion AWD system stands out from the competition
The Volkswagen 4Motion all-wheel drive system is found on multiple vehicles within the Volkswagen lineup including the all new 2022 Volkswagen Taos, the Volkswagen Tiguan, the redesigned Volkswagen Golf R, and the Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport.
Although all-wheel drive systems are all similar in their capabilities, there are nevertheless significant differences between the different all-wheel drive systems available on the market. The Volkswagen 4Motion all-wheel drive technology happens to be one of the most advanced in the business. With Volkswagen 4Motion technology, you get constant grip and stability winter or summer in any situation while also enjoying impressive efficiency. Let's take a look at some of the ways that the Volkswagen 4Motion technology stands out from its competitors.
Constant torque distribution
There are a variety of ways that all-wheel drive systems can transfer power to the front and rear axles. Most systems have a set torque distribution percentage between the front and rear axles while other systems are simply reactive and send torque to the rear axle only when needed. The Volkswagen 4Motion system is constantly varying torque from one axle to the next and can immediately transfer the needed amount of power to the rear axle or back to the front depending on road conditions.
Instant traction
The benefits of this continuously variable torque distribution are numerous. For starters, it means much quicker reaction times when a loss of traction is detected. Because torque is constantly moving back and forth between the front and rear axles, the ability of the system to send power where it is needed instantaneously is a significant advantage, especially in changing road conditions or in sudden loss of traction situations like when you drive over a puddle on the highway.
Exceptional efficiency
On the other hand, because the system is constantly varying torque from one axle to the next, the system only uses the 4Motion all-wheel drive technology when needed. In other words, on a clear summer day on the highway, for example, you get all of the benefits of a traditional front-wheel drive vehicle in terms of fuel economy. All-wheel drive vehicles always consume more fuel than equivalent front-wheel drive vehicles, but with the Volkswagen 4Motion AWD system, the benefits far outweigh the compromise on efficiency.
